Inspired in part by Maurice Duruflé’s Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens, this piece aims to mensurate and harmonize the original “ego sum vitis vera” chant while remaining as faithful as possible to the beautiful, free-flowing melody. Having been raised Catholic and having studied chant in school, I have long been fascinated with this earliest of spiritual music. Though no longer as Christian as I once was, I can’t help but find something deeply moving in chant.
