As the title suggests, William Wordsworth wrote “Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802” as he was traveling across said bridge on his way to Paris. Wordsworth, well-known for his depictions of nature, was surprisingly struck by the beauty of London, praising its majesty and beauty.
The music moves fluidly between key and meter to convey each image as closely as possible. I grew up in a rural area, surrounded by nature and beautiful forests. When I moved to a city for college, it was difficult to find any beauty in the busy streets and construction. After eight years living in the city, I am struck by the same feeling that Wordsworth conveyed: that sometimes domes, theatres, and temples can be as beautiful as the forest.
